Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana 2026; Benefits, Eligibility & How to Apply

The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) is a government-sponsored health insurance scheme launched in 2008 with the objective of providing financial protection to families living Below the Poverty Line (BPL) and workers in the unorganized sector. The primary goal of this scheme is to alleviate the burden of medical expenses by offering cashless treatment facilities up to Rs.30,000 per family per year at empanelled public and private hospitals. Beneficiaries of this scheme are issued a biometric smart card, enabling them to easily access medical services across various locations within the country. Under the RSBY scheme, coverage extends to the treatment of pre-existing diseases right from the very first day of coverage, making it particularly beneficial for impoverished families. Over time, this scheme has largely been superseded by the more comprehensive and expansive 'Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana' (PM-JAY); this new initiative offers enhanced financial protection and a broader spectrum of benefits.
